Surgical Abortion

An In-Office Procedure Option Under Florida Law, Up To 6 Weeks

When medical abortion isn’t appropriate or you prefer a surgical approach, a surgical abortion is a safe option in a controlled clinical setting. At Miami Women’s Center, we provide surgical abortions within the legal window, with patient comfort, safety, and dignity guiding every step.

Florida Legal Context

As of May 1, 2024, Florida law prohibits most abortions after 6 weeks of gestation, calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period.

This restriction applies to both medical and surgical abortion methods. Exceptions may exist in narrow circumstances, such as to save the life of the pregnant person, for fatal fetal anomalies, or if the pregnancy results from rape, incest, or human trafficking (with proper documentation) under certain conditions.

What To Expect

Who qualifies?

You may qualify for a surgical abortion if:

  • You are within the legally allowed gestational age (up to 6 weeks under Florida’s law)
  • You have had an ultrasound confirming an intrauterine pregnancy
  • You have no contraindications (such as certain uterine anomalies, bleeding disorders, or medical conditions)
  • You are able to attend all required clinic visits (pre-procedure, procedure day, follow-up)

If you are beyond the 6-week limit, we can discuss whether an exception applies based on your medical or personal circumstances, or refer you to alternate options if possible.

What To Expect: The Procedure

  • Pre-procedure Evaluation: You’ll begin with a consultation in which we review your medical history, perform lab work and an ultrasound, discuss anesthesia/sedation options, and answer all your questions.
  • Consent & Requirements: You will sign informed consent. Florida law requires at least 24 hours between your consultation and the procedure (with some limited exceptions).
  • Procedure Day: On the day of surgery, you’ll arrive at the clinic, be prepared, and given medication or sedation to ensure your comfort. The surgical abortion is performed using gentle suction (vacuum aspiration) and may include dilation of the cervix if needed.
  • Post-Procedure Recovery: After the procedure, you will rest in recovery and be monitored for a short period. You’ll receive aftercare instructions, pain management guidance, and emergency contact information.

Risks & Safety Considerations

Surgical abortions are very safe when performed by experienced providers in a clinical setting, but like any procedure, there are potential risks:

  • Infection
  • Incomplete procedure (some tissue remains, requiring follow-up)
  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding
  • Uterine perforation (rare)
  • Anesthesia or sedation complications (if applicable)
  • Cervical injury

We take every precaution to minimize these risks. You will receive clear instructions on when to seek medical attention.

Recovery & Aftercare

You may experience cramping and light bleeding or spotting for several days. Most patients recover quickly, often returning to daily routines within 24–48 hours (depending on sedation and individual factors).

We will schedule a follow-up appointment (ultrasound or clinical check) to ensure that the abortion is complete and that your reproductive health remains intact.

You’ll also receive guidance on contraception, emotional support, and any needed referrals.
